The taweez (also spelled ta’wiz, taʿwīz, or taweez) is a traditional protective amulet widely used in Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and across Central Asia. Such objects carried strong religious and apotropaic meaning and were worn to protect against illness, misfortune, and the evil eye. Within folk traditions, the taweez represents a fusion of faith, protective magic, and metal craftsmanship.

The defining feature of the taweez is its cylindrical compartment, designed to hold a written prayer, Quranic verse, sacred text, or personal talisman. The contents remained hidden, as protection was believed to derive from the presence of the sacred text rather than its visibility. The compartment is securely closed, allowing long-term use without disturbing the interior.

This example is crafted from metal using traditional techniques. The cylindrical body is decorated with ornamental bands, while numerous hanging chains with small metal beads complete the form. These dangling elements served both decorative and symbolic purposes — their movement and subtle sound were believed to enhance the amulet’s protective power. Natural patina and signs of wear attest to age and authentic use.

Attachment loops allow the amulet to be suspended from a cord or chain or incorporated into a larger tribal necklace. In practice, such pieces could be worn on the chest, sewn onto garments, or attached to household items. The pendant form ensured portability and continuous protection.

With dimensions of approximately 14 cm in height, 24 cm in width, and a cylindrical diameter of about 4 cm, the amulet clearly reflects a ritual rather than decorative function. Taweezy of this size often held significant symbolic value and were sometimes passed down within families. Authentic examples with intact compartments and complete hanging elements are increasingly rare today and highly valued by collectors.
