Antique Roman glass
This category includes beads made from old Roman glass , sourced from the Middle East, including Afghanistan and ancient trade routes. This glass comes from a material with a centuries-old history , dating back to Roman times, when glass products were widely used and traded across vast areas of Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Hence the term "Romanesque glass" used in collectors' circles.
Originally, this glass was part of vessels, jugs, and everyday objects that deteriorated and fragmented over the centuries. The recovered fragments were carefully selected and hand-crafted , then cut into pieces of varying shapes and colors, preserving the material's natural structure.
Many beads show obvious signs of age – surface dulling, micro-damage, discoloration, and corrosion of the glass, resulting from long-term exposure to environmental conditions. These characteristics are not a defect, but a confirmation of the authenticity and age of the material , clearly distinguishing them from contemporary, mass-produced glass beads.
Venetian glass beads are used as central elements and accents in ethnic, historical and designer jewelry , where what matters is the origin of the raw material, its history and unique character, rather than the perfect repetition of form.
