Balkh Sultanate Lapis Pendant

Handcrafted from patinated brass, this Afghan pendant showcases a striking natural lapis lazuli cabochon framed by intricate ornamental engraving. The rich cobalt-blue gemstone contrasts beautifully with the darkened metal, creating a design reminiscent of the historic jewellery once traded along the Silk Road. A small turquoise accent above the main stone completes the composition with a vibrant touch of colour.

The pendant's elegant silhouette recalls ceremonial amulets and traditional ornaments from northern Afghanistan. Flowing arabesque patterns and floral motifs evoke the decorative art of historic cities such as Balkh, Herat and Mazar-i-Sharif. The aged patina enhances its authentic character, giving the piece the appearance of a treasured heirloom with centuries of artistic tradition behind it.

Lapis lazuli has been mined in the mountains of Badakhshan for thousands of years and is regarded as one of Afghanistan's most celebrated natural treasures. Revered by ancient civilizations, it symbolized wisdom, royalty and spiritual enlightenment. Tiny golden flecks of pyrite scattered throughout the stone make every pendant completely unique.

Its generous size makes this pendant a bold statement piece, whether worn on a leather cord, braided necklace or substantial silver chain. Perfect for lovers of ethnic, bohemian and Middle Eastern jewellery, it combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless design. As each pendant is individually handmade, slight variations in engraving and stone pattern are a natural part of its uniqueness.
