Filigree Scarf Pin in Silver with Red Stones

This unusual piece belongs to a less common category of traditional utilitarian jewelry – decorative pins for fastening scarves, veils, or other items of clothing. In many regions of South Asia and the Middle East, such ornaments served both practical and decorative purposes. Women used them to fasten lightweight fabrics, and their rich ornamentation made them a visible element of the overall outfit.

The central section is made of openwork silver using the filigree technique. Thin wires and spiral motifs create a distinctive teardrop shape, known in decorative arts as the paisley motif – one of the most recognizable ornaments in jewelry from India and neighboring regions. Red stones, which reflect light and add expressiveness to the composition, are an additional accent.

The design is based on a long needle with a hinge, suggesting its function as a fabric pin. This design allowed the item to be inserted through the fabric and securely hold a scarf, turban, or piece of clothing. Unlike classic brooches, it does not have a clasp mechanism – a solution typical of traditional textile jewelry.

This type of jewelry was created in small artisan workshops and was often handcrafted, so each piece has its own unique character. The subtle patina of the silver and minor irregularities in the ornamentation are natural traces of the jeweler's work and emphasize the authenticity of the item.
