Turkmen Asyk Necklace with Colored Glass

Asyk pendants are among the most characteristic pieces of Turkmen jewelry. They were large, expressive ornaments worn as the centerpiece of necklaces or ceremonial attire. Their purpose was to attract attention and highlight the richness of ornamentation typical of Central Asian crafts.

The presented piece stands out for its impressive scale. The pendant itself is very large and made of brass. The entire surface is covered with a dense decoration of small spiral motifs and numerous dotted ornaments. In the center is an oval stone in a warm, honey-brown shade, providing the visual focal point of the entire composition.

Numerous small blue glass inlays are placed around the central element, and several red stones are placed at the bottom of the pendant. Traditional jewelry from the region often used colored glass as decoration, allowing for intense colors without the use of precious stones.

The natural patina of the metal and the slight irregularities of the ornamentation attest to the handiwork of the craftsman. Such large pendants are among the most striking forms of Turkmen jewelry and are especially prized by collectors of ethnic jewelry today.
